Molly Crabapple’s in Hell

Artist and illustrator, Molly Crabapple is having a lot of trouble escaping from the depths of hell. Last year she celebrated her 28th birthday by locking herself in a New York City hotel for an entire week, covering the room wall to wall with paper, drawing on every space possible, and now chronicling her project in a new book entitled Week in Hell. Not only has she already spent an entire week in hell, but she is currently working on the ‘Hell’ segment of the Wheel of Life for Karma-Con.

We’ve asked her a few questions about her work, relationship with Himalayan Art and why she likes hell so much.

  1. What is it about Himalayan art that resonates most with you?

I love the hyper detail of Himalayan art- the tiny meticulous brushstrokes delineated boddhisatvas and demons.

  2. What compelled you to choose the “Hell” segment of The Wheel of Life?

The Devil always gets the best lines!

  3. What was your creative process like in terms of making this ancient artwork your own?

I looked at many works of art, both Eastern and Western, dealing with Hell, and let myself riff.

  4. How does this drawing correspond with or depart from your normal style and subject matter?

In my section of hell, dozens of tiny women (“girlthings” in the vocabulary of my art), are chased by animal-demons into the mouth of an obese giant.  It’s more violent than my work usually is, but equally whimsical.

  5. How does the experience of making art in a public setting differ from working in your own studio?

People stop by to ask me what I’m working on, and about my materials techniques.
